The Revwriter Resource: Writer's Guidelines

Interested in writing for "The Revwriter Resource?"

Tell me about your experience in church leadership in your query letter. All writers must demonstrate their firsthand knowledge of the realities of parish ministry.

The RevWriter Resource is a monthly electronic newsletter offering devotions and practical articles for the busy congregational leader. Use the material either individually or with groups. Each issue focuses on a specific ministry theme and includes resources for parish ministry. In Advent and Lent, we'll publish just devotions to nurture the busy spirit.

Writers retain rights to their articles and grant The Revwriter Resource first electronic rights. Newsletters will be archived for a period of one year at Revwriter.com, then they will be removed from the website. I ask that writers not submit their material elsewhere during their publication month. No simultaneous submissions or reprints.

Query the editor, Susan M. Lang at editor@revwriter.com with ideas for articles and issue themes.

Needed:

Articles focusing on the topics and issues directly related to congregational ministry. Writers must demonstrate a knowledge of the practice and the realities of parish ministry.

Articles may be based on direct experience or must be thoroughly researched.

Deadline:

Five weeks prior to the anticipated publication date. The editor reserves the right to edit materials submitted.

Past themes have included:

  • The Language of Conflict
  • God's Living Word
  • Your Life As A Witness-Tending to Self-Care
  • The Caring Church-Inclusivity Awareness
  • Tools for Spiritual Growth
  • Lenten and Advent Devotions
  • Peacemaking in Times of War and Terrorism
  • Staff Compensation Planning
  • Leadership Team Building
  • Supporting the Grieving
  • Witnessing 9 to 5

You are welcome to pitch an issue theme.

Article format is:

  • Discussion of theme topic: 800-1,000 words
  • Questions or exercises for group use: approx. 250-500 words
  • A list of resources to compliment the article should be included. The list may include print and cyber sources such as e-newsletters and websites. This will be listed under the Ministry Resources Section.

For all quoted or attributed material, please indicate the primary source of the quote or attribution along with a hard copy of the actual quote or attribution and the page containing the copyright information of the original source.

Submission format:

Save as a text file and cut and paste the article in the body of an e-mail and send to editor@revwriter.com. (Some word processing programs add special characters. Saving the file as plain/ascii text will remove them.)

Payment:

$20 upon publication

Devotion Writing:

During Advent and Lent, we'll publish just devotions to nurture the busy spirit.

Query first at editor@revwriter.com if you are interested in writing a devotion for RevWriter Resource. To be included in the pool of devotional writers, tell me your background and writing experience. I may request a writing sample or trial devotion.

Payment for each devotion will be $10.

Submission Format:
  • Use the NRSV translation. Devotions will uplift the Grace of God through Jesus Christ, and not judgment.
  • Check the archived copies of The RevWriter Resource to see past samples.
  • When submitting your manuscript, be sure to note the assigned lesson for the day. Double space between lines.
  • Pick a focus verse to draw the reader into the text. The devotion may tell a story, but be sure it is text based.
  • Type your focus verse [No more than 3 typed lines] Double space between lines.
  • Type your devotion. It should be single-spaced and should be no more than 250 words. If you desire, you may end with a one line prayer.
  • At the very bottom of the page type Copyright 2004 Your Name. You will retain copyright to your work and can submit it else where. You'll need to notify editors where it was first published.
  • Save as a text file and cut and paste into an e-mail and send to me at editor@revwriter.com
